Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Novant Health hopes its hospital-at-home success will encourage more private payers to cover the care model and federal lawmakers to make it a long-term solution.
Here are five things to know from a June 2 news release:
1. The 19-hospital system launched hospital at home at Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington in 2024.
2. The program has since admitted 482 patients and conducted 5,378 virtual visits with them from the comfort of their homes, with “high patient satisfaction.”
3. The initiative has freed up inpatient capacity, saving more than 1,595 hospital bed days.
4. Novant Health’s hospital-at-home program has resulted in zero healthcare-acquired infections.
5. But the CMS waiver for acute hospital care at home expires in 2030, and private insurance coverage is spotty. “Without a stable and widespread reimbursement structure, many hospital-at-home programs may struggle to continue,” the health system stated. “Advocates are urging policymakers to make the CMS waivers permanent and for private insurers to more broadly adopt the model.”
