On May 9, Cedars-Sinai announced that it would establish a center that focuses on advancing artificial intelligence and machine learning in healthcare. Dr. Moore told Becker’s that the move comes as Cedars-Sinai has already established a number of teams throughout the health system that are engaged in extensive applications of AI and machine learning for patient care.
“Cedars-Sinai has established an artificial intelligence council composed of all the leaders throughout the organization who are involved in AI,” Dr. Moore said. “Whether they are working to identify patients’ risk of specific diseases or trying to predict the number of beds, they are seeking to know if some groups of patients are getting different care than other groups. The new center will complement those efforts by developing leading-edge AI algorithms and software and providing educational opportunities.”
Dr. Moore said the center will focus on the following: developing automated machine learning with the aim of democratizing AI, developing fair and unbiased AI algorithms, and developing AI algorithms that utilize biomedical knowledge to generate better models.
“While initially our focus is on clinical use cases, we see the promise of AI having a positive impact on the full journey of a patient throughout the healthcare journey, from disease prediction and prevention, to personalized medicine and therapies, and efficiencies that ease the administrative burden,” Dr. Moore said.
But to effectively integrate these technologies, Tiffani Bright, PhD, co-director of the center, told Becker’s that the health system will vet them to ensure they are taking an ethical approach to their development.
“The center will emphasize ethical health AI integration and deployment by incorporating an ethical impact as part of our algorithm life cycle; having intentional and ongoing conversations with diverse stakeholders will help us identify and address potential biases that may arise throughout the development phases,” Dr. Bright said. “These conversations with diverse stakeholders will also aid in how we ethically integrate and deploy solutions and tools in the clinical setting.”
