Boston-based Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center has established the Richard A. and Susan F. Smith Institute for Evidence, Innovation and Policy.
The institute expands BIDMC’s Smith Center for Outcomes Research into a multidisciplinary research enterprise made up of several centers. Philanthropic support from Richard and Susan Smith helped found the center in 2015. The center has since grown to more than 60 faculty investigators, statisticians, research staff and postdoctoral fellows.
The centers within the new institute will focus on medical device innovation and evaluation, health policy, clinical outcomes and trials research, quantitative methods, and AI in medicine and procedural care. Each center will have its own scientific mission. The institute will supply shared strategic leadership, infrastructure and ways to collaborate across disciplines.
Robert Yeh, MD, the Katz Silver Family Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, will serve as executive chair. Rishi Wadhera, MD, associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, will serve as director.
The institute will also train fellows and junior investigators from BIDMC, Beth Israel Lahey Health, other Boston-area institutions and programs across the U.S. and around the world.
