From an AI agent that calls patients after discharge to one that resubmits denied claims on command, Epic used this year’s Users Group Meeting to show off dozens of features in various stages of rollout.
The EHR giant detailed the features last week during “Cool Stuff Ahead,” an annual UGM tradition in which a skit walks attendees through new capabilities before Epic staff explain the underlying technology and rollout timing.
This year’s version featured live AI agents — Art for clinicians, Emmie for patients and Penny for revenue cycle staff — working through a fictional patient’s hospital stay, from a Ferris wheel mishap through discharge.
“Back in the day, we released new versions about every 18 months. Those were big,” Seth Howard, Epic’s executive vice president of research and development, said at the session. “Now we release new versions every three months. … Today’s three-month release contains more code than the typical 18-month release of the past.” He said the latest release contains 30% more code than last year’s, with about half of it delivered through Nebula, Epic’s cloud platform.

Epic also used the session to reiterate progress on features previewed at past UGMs, including its expanding Healthcare Network of payers, labs and life sciences partners and the rollout of Epic Ops, its healthcare-specific ERP suite, which is live at six customer sites and moving through the first of three planned waves.
