The CIO role continues to grow to encompass enterprisewide digital transformation.

Here are three ways the role is changing, according to a July 29 Forbes Research article:

1. CIOs are more likely than any other C-suite leader to prioritize upskilling employees as a growth strategy over the next two years (36%, up from 24% in 2024).

2. IT chiefs align digital initiatives with sustainability goals to ensure agility and resilience more than any of their C-level peers (44%). CIOs are also the most likely to believe the next generation of leaders at their organization is going to focus more on sustainability (87%).

3. CIOs plan to rely heavily on automation over the next two years, with 52% fully transitioning to automated digital workflows, 48% automating more processes, 36% deploying more cloud solutions, 34% expanding the use of robots and cobots, and 34% enabling more digital self-service for customers.
