How MultiCare Health System allocates IT resources for peak value

Casey Hossa, senior vice president and CIO of MultiCare Health System in Tacoma, Wash., shares the system's top IT focus areas.

Question: How do you allocate the health IT team's resources? What is the breakdown?

Casey Hossa: My leadership team has the responsibility to understand the value of their services in a manner that resonates with business stakeholders and upper management. To support this view, we have created a portfolio structure that allows for us to manage demand across common business functions and grouping of technology products. Our view is to balance the investments in new and strategic capabilities along with the key elements of managing good and resilient technology products.

Q: What initiatives have the greatest return on investment?

CH: Our strategic investments that have a strong return and value propositions are focused on data, digital, population health capabilities and improving the speed and lowering the cost for expansion. We have also been diligent on understanding our IT costs and how we perform against delivering affordable care.
