In the past, Google has been able to retain employees by offering high salaries, free food and various health benefits. However, in recent years, scandals have rocked Google and other Silicon Valley companies, making it easier for startups to poach tech talent.
“We are in the health of Silicon Valley and interestingly, a lot of people say you’re down the road from Google, how in the world do you recruit? Well the answer is they come to us,” Livongo founder and CEO Glen Tullman told CNBC.
Around two-thirds of Livongo’s staff have chronic conditions, including diabetes, or have a family-member who is treating a chronic condition. Around a third of the team is comprised of behavioral scientists, data scientists and software engineers.
By hiring employees who would benefit from the products Livonogo is offering, the company sets itself apart from Apple, Google and other tech giants.
