How do Physicians Use, Plan to Use mHealth? 14 Findings

Physicians most often use mHealth technology to determine medication interactions, but they have found a number of other uses for it as well, according to a survey administered by MedData Group.

The survey asked physicians on their perceptions, challenges and behaviors regarding mHealth. Surveys were conducted between December 2013 and March 2014, and the results represent 532 survey responses.

Here are the top eight ways physicians reported using mHealth.

1. Medication interactions: 48 percent
2. Diagnosis: 27 percent
3. Don’t use mobile apps: 23 percent
4. Other: 19 percent
5. To access EHR: 19 percent
6. Clinical Notes: 16.5 percent
7. Labs, images and tests: 16 percent
8. e-Prescribing: 15.5 percent

Here are six types of mHealth apps physicians may consider using over the next 12 months.

1. Mobile access to EHR: 59 percent
2. Secure texting: 41 percent
3. Point of care drug, device or diagnosis information: 40 percent
4. Patient portals for scheduling communication: 35 percent
5. Patient use of mobile devices for health monitoring: 22 percent
6. Patient e-visits leveraging mobile devices: 15 percent
