How can healthcare organizations safeguard celebrities’, politicians’ PHI?

When an average Joe visits the hospital, it’s fairly run-of-the-mill for healthcare employees. But when a celebrity, politician or professional athlete visits the hospital, their protected health information is especially vulnerable.

Because the general public is so fascinated by their lives, public figures are particularly susceptible to having their PHI compromised. “It’s human nature for all of us, including hospital employees, to be curious about all things celebrity-related,” according to a recent whitepaper from Protenus. “But VIPs have the same rights to privacy as the rest of us.”

What can hospitals and health systems do to protect celebrities’ sensitive data? In its whitepaper titled “Protecting VIP Privacy,” Protenus highlighted why clinical machine learning can be beneficial for protecting public figures’ PHI.

Rather than utilizing a rules-based system to tag and keep track of public figures while they’re at a hospital, Protenus advocates for advanced analytics. “A rules-based system is like an ever-expanding Rube Goldberg machine — it might just barely get the job done, but it’s costly, prone to failure and highly inefficient,” the whitepaper reads.

Instead, a machine learning or advanced analytics platform “adapts to your hospital, your patients, your users and your needs, continuously becoming more effective.”
