Hospitals' Top 10 IT Staffing Needs

According to the 2013 HIMSS Analytics Database, the average hospital's IT department employs an average of 39 full-time equivalents. However, many organizations cited the need for additional employees to best handle this year's many IT projects and initiatives, according to the 25th Annual HIMSS Leadership Survey.

According to the survey, the following are the areas of hospitals' greatest staffing needs:

1. Clinical application support (36 percent)
2. Network/architecture support (29 percent)
3. Clinical informatics (21 percent)
4. IT security (20 percent)
5. Systems integration (16 percent)
6. User training (13 percent)
7. System design/implementation (12 percent)
8. Help desk (12 percent)
9. PC/server support (12 percent)
10. Regulatory/reimbursement (10 percent)

Survey results are based on responses from 298 senior-level IT executives from hospitals and health systems.
