HIMSS recognizes 3 students in inaugural National Health IT Week Student Advocacy Challenge

The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society has named the recipients of its first-ever National Health IT Week Student Advocacy Challenge.

The challenge, sponsored by HIMSS Government Relations Team, recognizes three students this year. These honorees were selected from six student participants, who implemented innovative advocacy activities to advance public health IT awareness.

Here are the three honorees.

Reginald Tuyay (University of San Francisco): Mr. Tuyay, who was named the first place winner, was awarded a $1,000 travel stipend and complimentary registration to HIMSS17 health IT conference in Orlando, Fla. He presented a policy brief and advocacy action plan about the role health IT can play in community health, with a focus on California's childhood obesity issues.

Marilyn Stephen (University of California, Berkeley): Ms. Marilyn, who was named the second place winner, was awarded a $100 prize. She advocated for campus health insurance to offer behavior health services via telemedicine.

Nina Smith (University of Texas School of Biomedical Informatics at Houston): Ms. Smith, who was named the third place winner, was awarded $50. She investigated ways to increase access to telemedicine, online patient portals, wearable devices and smart phones for seniors.
