HIMSS offers 4 steps to interoperability

Health IT is paramount to transforming healthcare, and interoperability is a cornerstone of positively transforming the nation's healthcare system, according to HIMSS.

In a position paper, HIMSS recommends Congress push interoperability to the forefront of the industry. HIMSS outlines the following four steps to achieving interoperability.

1. Facilitate core interoperability through development and implementation of nationwide, agreed-upon data and transmission standards.

2. Harmonize quality reporting standards.

3. Enhance privacy and security.

4. Improve patient safety.
