HIPAA doesn't only protect patients' sensitive health information, it also gives individuals the right to see and obtain copies of their health information. In efforts to inform patients of these rights, ONC and its Office for Civil Rights have created videos outlining what HIPAA guarantees.
The three HIPAA Access Videos each discuss a different element of patients' rights. The first provides a high-level overview of the law, the second discusses associated fees and timelines for patients seeking access to their records, and the third outlines third party access to medical records.
"Having easy access to their health information empowers individuals to be more in control of decisions regarding their health and well-being," according to the ONC.
