HHS Releases Protocol for HIPAA Audit Program

HHS has released a protocol for its Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act audit program.

The HIPAA program periodically audits processes, controls and policies of selected covered entities for compliance with HIPAA’s privacy and security rules and breach notification standards, as required by the HITECH Act. The new protocol will cover privacy rule requirements for protected health information and its disclosure; security rule requirements for administrative, physical and technical safeguards; and breach notification requirements.
