A running list of healthcare data breaches affecting 500 or more individuals is on the website, and there are currently 931 breaches on the list. More data breaches may have occurred than are currently on the list because healthcare organizations have up to 60 days after discovering a data breach to report it to HHS.
Of the breaches on HHS’ list, 25 percent involved business associates, who are now directly liable for HIPAA compliance under the HIPAA omnibus rule. According to the list, business associate-related breaches have affected almost 15 million people since 2009.
