Healthcare led industries in 2014 data breaches

Across industries, the healthcare sector experienced the highest percentage of breaches in 2014, according to Identity Theft Resource.

Of the 761 reported data breaches, 322 of them (42.3 percent) came from the healthcare industry. The total number of records exposed totaled more than 83 million, with approximately 8.25 million coming from healthcare, approximately 9.9 percent of the total records breached.

Some notable data breaches from 2014 include the cyberattack on Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems in August, which compromised the protected health information of 4.5 million patients.

In June, the Montana Department of Public Health notified 1.3 million people that their data may have been compromised after hackers accessed the system's server.
