Express Scripts to launch formulary for digital health devices, apps

Pharmacy benefits manager Express Scripts will launch the industry's first formulary specifically for digital health solutions.

The new formulary, which will launch in 2020, will be a list of technology and software-enabled applications and devices approved for patient use. It will be similar to a medication formulary, but it will focus on digital health solutions.

Inclusion of a digital solution on the formulary, or list of covered entities, will be decided by pharmacists and experts in health research and user experience, who will review clinical outcomes and therapeutic benefit data to determine which applications will be covered by insurance.

Express Scripts said the decision to launch a formulary for digital health is to help patients better manage diseases and help "payers to navigate the hundreds of thousands of currently available personal health technologies and interventions."
