Epic asks court to reduce $940M awarded in Tata case

Epic Systems has asked a federal court to reduce the $940 million it was awarded in damages against an Indian consultancy firm, citing state laws that put a cap on the amount of punitive damages permissible, reports Wisconsin State Journal.

In April, a Wisconsin jury ruled in favor of Epic in a lawsuit alleging Mumbai, India-based Tata Consultancy Services stole trade secrets and confidential information from the vendor. The jury awarded Verona, Wis.-based Epic $240 million in compensatory damages and $700 million in punitive damages.

However, Wisconsin law restricts punitive damages to be a maximum of double compensatory damages, so Epic requested the awarded punitive damages to be decreased to $480 million, according to the report.

Given the request, the new award would total $720 million.
