When a developer seeks to achieve certification for meaningful use direct messaging requirements from the ONC's Health IT Certification Program for a health IT service or system, it has to be confident that the software will stand up after being put through its paces.
That means the software must be designed to meet regulatory standards put forth by HHS and pass muster in accredited testing laboratories overseen by both a National Institute of Standards and Technology voluntary laboratory accreditation program as well as an ONC-approved accreditor. Tests for interoperability are a component of this process.
EMR Direct's phiMail server has stood up to this examination and proved itself worthy of ONC-HIT certification for direct messaging. The phiMail Server software powers EMR Direct's HISP service, which is used by more than 80 EHR vendors to provide safe messaging and transfer of information related to EHR, connecting customers with more than 40,000 health care organizations nationwide and 760,000 EMR Direct addresses nationwide.

EMR Direct's phiMail server software, which manages encryption, digital certificates and transport for Direct messaging, is now one of more than 6,500 ONC-HIT certified products.
