What you need to know about CMS’ latest changes to its EHR incentive program

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is proposing a number of changes to its electronic health record (EHR) incentive program, beginning with a new name to better reflect the program’s purpose. “Meaningful Use,” CMS announced in April, will now be known as “Promoting Interoperability.” Cardinal Health breaks down the proposed changes.

CMS’ proposed changes are part of a new federal initiative called “MyHealthEData.” According to CMS, the initiative is designed to “break down the barriers” that currently prevent patients from easily accessing their electronic records and will give them “true control of their own health records from the device or application of their choice.”

Interoperability—the ability of EHRs and other IT systems to freely communicate and exchange data with one another—is widely recognized as critical to such access, but it remains a work in progress at most healthcare organizations. Click to continue>>
