Four things to know:
1. During October, patients at Vanderbilt Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center, the Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Clinic and the Liver Transplant Clinic were given full access to their clinicians’ EHR notes.
2. More than 40 million patients in the U.S. have access to their clinical notes through OpenNotes.
3. To access clinicians’ notes, patients must log into VUMC’s patient portal My Health at Vanderbilt, which contains information including health history, medications and lab results.
4. The pilot currently grants access to approximately 26,000 VUMC patients, and the health system plans to implement the initiative system wide.
