University of Rochester (N.Y.) Medical Center has agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit involving MyChart and website users for $2.85 million.
A patient filed the complaint in 2023, alleging the health system shared patient data with Facebook parent company Meta for marketing purposes. People who used UR Medicine’s MyChart patient portal between Jan. 11, 2021, and Jan. 11, 2023, or filled out forms on its website between Jan. 1, 2018, and June 12, 2023, are eligible to file a claim by July 21.
Becker’s reached out to UR Medicine for comment. “The privacy and security of URMC patients’ health information is exceptionally important, and the protection of this confidential information remains a top priority,” a health system spokesperson told WROC. “We continually assess our data collection, data privacy, and digital monitoring tools and practices so that they meet or exceed security standards. While URMC disputes the plaintiffs’ allegations, we are pleased to have reached a resolution.”
