UPMC CIO says Epic transition is in a ‘stabilization period’ amid patient portal issues

Pittsburgh-based UPMC is working through patient portal, workflow and technical issues following the latest phase of its transition to Epic, TribLive reported Oct. 7.

Since the go-live, patients have complained of trouble logging in to the MyUPMC portal, missing information and longer waits at some facilities.

UPMC CIO Chris Carmody told the publication that the health system is in a “stabilization period” and expects teams to keep working through outstanding issues over the coming “days and weeks.”

Mr. Carmody said known problems are limited to particular workflows, departments, devices and operational areas and are not affecting the entire system. He said UPMC expected a period of adjustment after a go-live of this size and has stationed support resources on-site to help staff.

He also acknowledged that some patients are waiting longer than usual as employees get used to the new platform and processes.

Mr. Carmody called the transition “one of the most complex technology transformations in UPMC’s history.” Moving patient and clinical data out of legacy systems and into Epic was only part of the work; the platform also had to be connected to hundreds of applications, devices and systems used in hospitals and physician offices.

UPMC carried over five years of critical patient data to Epic.

The health system’s most recent go-live this month brought 15 hospitals and hundreds of ambulatory practices in the Pittsburgh region and most of southwestern Pennsylvania onto Epic. The rollout is part of UPMC’s effort to consolidate nine EHRs onto a single platform.

UPMC began its first implementation wave in September 2025, covering hospitals and practices in central Pennsylvania, New York and Maryland. UPMC Washington & Greene and UPMC Trinity will join in future phases over the coming years, Mr. Carmody told TribLive.

UPMC has more than 40 hospitals and 800 physician offices and outpatient sites.
