Sacramento, Calif.-based Sutter Health opened a centralized capacity management center to coordinate patient flow, effectively adding 12 beds per day to system capacity, according to an Epic case study.
The 27-hospital system launched the command center in January 2025, using Epic’s Grand Central dashboard to manage patient flow in real time.
A three-hospital pilot running through the end of 2025 experienced a 27% reduction in excess length-of-stay days — the equivalent of 12 additional beds per day, the June 1 report shows. Emergency department throughput improved 8% despite a 5% rise in volume, and interfacility transfers climbed 29%. Compared to Sutter hospitals outside the pilot, the command center reduced excess days by 44%.
Sutter expanded the model to 11 hospitals by February 2026 and plans to bring its remaining facilities online in the coming months.
