Diabetes is the seventh biggest killer of Americans and costs around $320 billion a year in healthcare costs and reduced productivity. Making referrals to the National Diabetes Prevention Program has the ability to stop high-risk patients from developing diabetes through lifestyle changes, according to the study.
The study asked 1,503 providers what they recommend for patients at risk of diabetes and how they would refer them to the National Diabetes Prevention Program. Most providers (67.5 percent) answered they were most likely to give the at-risk patients educational materials. Only 15.2 percent of providers referred patients to the program, but of those that did refer them, 58 percent used an EHR to do so.
EHR systems also came in handy for managing patients, with 43 percent of the providers who have EHR capabilities saying they used the system to identify and manage at-risk patients.
