Art — Epic’s AI for clinicians — drafts care plan notes for nurses at the end of shifts, summarizing patients’ progress and recommending next steps for incoming caregivers. The AI incorporates flowsheets, medication administration records, orders, prior notes and vitals. Nurses review, edit and finalize the drafts.
After nurses at Mercy, a 55-hospital system, started using the tool, end-of-shift documentation declined from an average of 3.5 minutes per note to roughly 32 seconds, according to a Feb. 26 Epic news release. Meanwhile, the number of notes completed fully and on time rose by 225%.
