Epic founder and CEO Judy Faulkner said the EHR vendor’s interoperability push over the past two decades has improved care and saved lives.
The company launched Care Everywhere in 2008, allowing patients to share their electronic medical records across disparate healthcare providers. Twenty-six million patient charts are exchanged every day using the software.
“Patients get better care when the right information reaches the right person at the right time,” Ms. Faulkner wrote in a June 1 blog post. “We built it, it was hard, it was meaningful, and the rest of the industry has followed, making healthcare better for all.”
She cited data to back up her statement: Care Everywhere data access is linked to a significant decrease in code blue events, unnecessary imaging orders and care gaps. Ms. Faulkner also noted that Epic clients were the first to exchange records electronically with the Social Security Administration, a point of contention in a recent lawsuit against the company.
