Aurora, Colo.-based UCHealth has reduced sepsis-related deaths systemwide through virtual monitoring and improved care coordination.
The health system now prevents about 1,000 more sepsis deaths annually compared to hospitals with average mortality rates — a fivefold improvement over the past five years, according to a Sept. 22 news release from UCHealth. All 14 its hospitals rank among the top 25% of hospitals nationwide for reducing sepsis mortality, and eight facilities rank in the top 10th percentile.
UCHealth has customized its Epic EHR to continuously monitor patient data, including oxygen levels, blood pressure, temperature and lab results. When early signs of sepsis are detected, its Virtual Health Center alerts bedside teams. In some cases, clinicians use secure video to collaborate in real time.
UCHealth Parkview Medical Center in Pueblo, Colo., which joined the system in 2023, is among the eight facilities in the top 10th percentile for sepsis outcomes. The virtual care model is now deployed across UCHealth’s hospitals and hundreds of clinics in Colorado, Southern Wyoming and Western Nebraska, the release said.
