Epic founder and CEO Judy Faulkner says it’s imperative to help government officials understand the software they set laws and regulations for.
In a Nov. 3 blog post, she recalled a conversation with a U.S. congressman who was set to deliver a keynote address at the HIMSS health IT conference.
“I said, ‘You’ve got interoperability mixed up with an EHR.’ And I told him how to correct it,” she wrote. “Then, ‘You’ve got personal health record mixed up with an EHR.’ And again, I told him how to fix it. ‘This is the right way to say it. This is the wrong way.’ For a part of it, I told him, ‘You are using U.K. terminology, and we don’t use that terminology in the U.S.'”
When he gave the talk, he got everything right, Ms. Faulkner remembered.
“Our government has many people who have the responsibility to make decisions involving software when they don’t know enough about how the software works,” she wrote. “We have to keep helping them to learn.”
