Health systems shift from EHRs to AI scribes

While health systems still prefer EHRs for most workflows, they are increasingly relying on AI scribes for certain tasks, Menlo Ventures found.

For instance, 51% of large health systems and 48% of small health systems favor EHRs for scheduling and intake, compared to 35% and 38%, respectively, who prefer ambient scribes, according to the venture capital firm’s Oct. 21 report.

The majority of both large and small health systems opt for AI scribe vendors for ambient scribing and chart review, per the survey of 700-plus healthcare decision-makers. However, EHR vendors like Epic and Oracle Health are developing or have introduced their own solutions in those categories.

Health systems overall still pick EHRs for prior authorizations — though AI scribe startup Abridge is creating a tool with Pittsburgh-based Higmark Health — as well as for clinical decision support, patient navigation, and billing and coding, the study determined.
