Ten health systems participating in a national research network have integrated polygenic risk results into their EHRs, enabling more than 70% of high-risk patients to receive direct outreach.
The project, part of the eMERGE Genomic Risk Assessment Network, involved nearly 24,000 participants across sites including Boston Children’s Hospital, Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn., Cincinnati Children’s and Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., according to a March 23 news release from Cincinnati Children’s. About 5,000 individuals received “higher-risk” results for conditions such as breast cancer, coronary heart disease and obesity.
In the study, published March 23 in the American Journal of Human Genetics, clinicians used EHR-linked alerts to initiate one-on-one conversations for high-risk individuals. Researchers reached 79% of adults and 68% of children by phone, video or in person. If patients could not be reached, results were added to the EHR with follow-up instructions.
