Epic Staffing Group has agreed to rebrand under a new name to resolve a federal trademark lawsuit brought by EHR vendor Epic.
Epic (aka Epic Systems) sued the healthcare and life sciences staffing firm in 2024, alleging trademark infringement, false designation of origin, unfair competition and dilution. The complaint argued that Epic Staffing Group’s 2022 adoption of Epic-formative names — including Epic Travel Staffing, Epic Specialty Staffing and Epic Government — was likely to confuse customers and traded on the goodwill of Epic’s trademarks, which the company has used since 1979.
Epic also pointed to overlap between the two companies’ customers, noting that some Epic Staffing Group job listings required candidates to have experience with Epic’s software. The staffing firm abandoned its application to register the “Epic Staffing Group” mark in September 2024.
“We took action because the Epic Staffing Group name caused confusion,” an Epic spokesperson told Becker’s. “We’re glad to have amicably resolved our differences and that Epic Staffing has agreed to rebrand to a new name.”
The parties reached the confidential settlement in May, according to court records viewed by Becker’s. The claims were dismissed without prejudice, with each side bearing its own legal costs.
“We’re pleased that we were able to amicably resolve all differences,” an Epic Staffing Group spokesperson told Becker’s. “We are focusing on looking forward, and are excited about the opportunities that new branding presents.”
