More than 1,000 hospitals and 22,000 clinics using Epic’s software are now connected to a federally backed health information network.
The organizations are live on the Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement, or TEFCA, a government-led initiative launched in 2022 to create a nationwide standard for sharing electronic health data. Epic announced the milestone in a June 2 news release.
TEFCA was established under the bipartisan 21st Century Cures Act and aims to make patient data more accessible across different health systems — a longstanding challenge in the U.S., where hospitals often operate on siloed IT infrastructure. Epic’s participating hospitals and clinics are connected through its own Qualified Health Information Network, Epic Nexus, which was designated a federal QHIN in 2023.
Among the early adopters of Epic Nexus’ TEFCA capabilities is Palo Alto, Calif.-based Stanford Health Care.
In 2024, the EHR vendor announced its goal for the entire Epic community to commit to transitioning to TEFCA, with plans to go live by the end of 2025.
