Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Corewell Health launched a digital tool through MyChart that allows patients to register as organ, eye and tissue donors directly within their health portal. Since the October rollout, more than 2,300 patients have registered, placing the system among Epic’s top 10 nationally out of nearly 200 participating hospitals.
Developed in partnership with Epic and Donate Life America, the feature links patients to the National Donate Life Registry and carries their donor status across state lines, according to a news release from the health system. The tool aims to close the gap between widespread public support for donation and lower actual registration rates, which currently sit at about 50% nationwide.
Corewell said the integrated workflow simplifies the process for patients and enhances the visibility of donor status in emergencies. Users can choose to donate for transplant, research or both, and their decision remains confidential from care teams.
Other health systems have rolled out similar MyChart integrations in recent months. Menomonee Falls, Wis.-based Froedtert ThedaCare Health and Evansville, Ind.-based Deaconess Health System both added organ donor registration tools to their patient portals last year.
