Mr. Burke said Cerner is “in the early stages of government business contributing to our growth,” according to FCW. He sees opportunities for Cerner to establish EHR contracts at the Federal Bureau of Prisons, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Indian Health Service, along with state Medicaid programs.
The Bureau of Prisons, for example, conducted market research to replace its record system in 2014, but hasn’t solicited a product, according to FCW. The Coast Guard, meanwhile, is seeking an EHR solution to implement across its 176 sites. The agency has been using paper records since it terminated its Epic contract in 2015.
In February, Fairchild Air Force Base outside Spokane, Wash., was the first U.S. Department of Defense facility to implement the Cerner EHR. Officials at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs said the agency plans to award its EHR contract to Cerner within the first two weeks of November.
Mr. Burke also said during the call he expects to close the VA contract by the end of 2017, according to FCW.
