Allscripts entered into a definitive agreement to acquire HealthGrid for $60 million in cash, plus up to $50 million in earnout payments on April 27, according to a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing. HealthGrid, a developer of mobile patient engagement platforms, enables providers to reach patients using existing contact information, without requiring them to sign up for a patient portal.

Under the agreement, Allscripts will integrate HealthGrid’s functions into its FollowMyHealth patient engagement platform. The acquisition will support providers using Allscripts’ FollowMyHealth platform to stay connected with patients across the continuum of care, including pre-care, point-of-care and post-care settings.

“The growing adoption of value-based care combined with only relatively modest patient portal adoption across the industry has prompted healthcare providers to seek more effective approaches to patient engagement solutions,” Allscripts CEO Paul M. Black said in a May 21 statement. “Put simply, consumer engagement is a top-of-mind challenge for CEOs and leaders of healthcare provider organizations of all sizes.”
