15 health systems where Epic is delivering measurable ROI

Epic founder and CEO Judy Faulkner told customers in August that health systems get more out of the EHR the more of it they turn on. Citing 31 enterprise go-lives, Epic found net revenue rose 13.7% in the second year after go-live for top-quartile organizations, and operating margins climbed with an organization’s Gold Stars level. Ms. Faulkner also said Epic doesn’t know whether the relationship is causal.

Epic and some of its customers have begun putting numbers on those returns, though few cite hard-dollar figures. Here are 15 health systems with reported results from the vendor’s EHR, AI and operations tools:

1. Livonia, Mich.-based Trinity Health has saved nearly $80 million by retiring legacy applications after its move to Epic, and leaders expect the savings to exceed $100 million.

2. Boone, N.C.-based UNC Health Appalachian posted its first positive operating margin in about a decade, reversing a projected $45 million loss. President and CEO Nathan Nipper credited workforce reductions, the closure of a wellness center and the Epic EHR, which the system finished rolling out in late 2024.

3. Chicago-based CommonSpirit Health said facilities that recently moved to Epic have charges greater than 105% of their pre-conversion levels, which the system attributed largely to stronger charge reconciliation and clinical engagement.

4. Bedford, N.H.-based SolutionHealth saw patient payments rise 78% in the first month after going live with MyChart billing and has sustained a 33% increase in cash collected.

5. New Providence, N.J.-based Summit Health cut medication prior authorization submission time 42% with Penny, Epic’s revenue cycle AI, and staff accepted 92% of its drafted responses without edits.

6. Indianapolis-based Community Health Network experienced 73% fewer billing-related In Basket messages after launching Ask Emmie, Epic’s conversational AI assistant in MyChart.

7. Rush University Medical Center in Chicago reduced billing-related customer service messages 58% with Emmie, Epic’s patient-facing AI assistant.

8. New Orleans-based Ochsner Health patients have used Emmie to reschedule more than 14,900 appointments, saving nearly 750 hours of staff time.

9. Christ Hospital Health Network in Cincinnati uses Art to pull incidental findings from radiology reports and prompt follow-up, which Epic said has helped produce a 69% early lung cancer detection rate, compared with a 46% national average.

10. Newport News, Va.-based Riverside Health clinicians using Art’s Inpatient Insights have reduced time spent on documentation and communication tasks by up to 32%.

11. Chesterfield, Mo.-based Mercy cut the time nurses spend writing end-of-shift notes 85% with AI-drafted notes, from 3.5 minutes to about 32 seconds each, and complete, on-time notes rose 225%.

12. Houston-based Texas Children’s cut the time spent reviewing patient messages 50% with In Basket Art.

13. Fort Wayne, Ind.-based Parkview Health cut provider schedule build time 75% after adopting Teamwork, the first application in Epic’s EpicOps ERP suite.

14. Greenville, N.C.-based ECU Health said using AI to summarize Transfer Center requests has saved its team an estimated 20 hours a week. The health system is an early adopter of Epic’s Agent Factory, which lets organizations build their own AI agents.

15. Columbus-based OhioHealth increased online appointment availability 16% using Epic’s dynamic scheduling templates.
