The program offers delivery services for over 70 businesses in the Miami area and does not feature fully autonomous cars but manually operated vehicles with the same sensors that are used on self-driving cars.
Restaurants using the service place food orders in a locker in the car, and customers retrieve the orders from the vehicles. Ford is working on a system that would serve multiple customers along the same route, and the cars have lockers of different sizes for food and other kinds of deliveries.
Ford and Postmates hope the service can be fully rolled out by 2021.
