The tool, IMPROVE-DD VTE, uses EHR data to alert clinicians of a patient’s risk of venous thromboembolism, a condition occurring when a blood clot forms in a vein. These alerts allow clinicians to prescribe clot-blocking medication before a patient seriously deteriorates.
The study showed that the use of the tool led to a 50 percent increase in prescriptions of clot preventive medications, according to a Nov. 7 Northwell news release.
Full results from the study are pending peer review and will be made available in the American Heart Association’s journal.
