Dallas, San Antonio in talks to merge HIEs

Two health information exchanges in two of Texas' largest cities are discussing the possibility of merging their exchanges, according to a San Antonio Business Journal report.

Healthcare Access San Antonio covers approximately 90 percent of its area's hospitals and physicians and Dallas-based North Texas Accountable Healthcare Partnership covers approximately 20 percent of its area's market, according to The Dallas Morning News.

Gijs Van Oort, executive director of HASA, told The Dallas Morning News that such a merge makes sense because it facilitates a statewide exchange of information and will only require vendors to link to one HIE instead of numerous ones. "Similarly, data requesters have to go to fewer sources to get their information. The fewer stops along the way, the lower the risk for technical breakdowns and the greater the efficiency of connecting," he said.
