The U.S. government on June 26 lifted its block on Anthropic’s Claude Mythos 5 AI model, clearing the startup to release it to more than 100 U.S. institutions, including major companies and government agencies, Semafor reported.
The reversal de-escalates a roughly two-week standoff between the Trump administration and Anthropic, one of the world’s most valuable private companies. The administration had imposed export controls on Mythos earlier in June, forcing a shutdown of the model and its counterpart, Fable 5, after Amazon and others warned the systems could be jailbroken for malicious use.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick conveyed the decision in a June 26 letter to Anthropic chief compute officer Tom Brown, according to the story. “I have determined that appropriate safeguards are in place to permit certain trusted partners to access the Claude Mythos 5 Model,” Mr. Lutnick wrote, citing progress in daily talks since the block took effect.
Under the arrangement, recipients named in an annex to the letter no longer need a license to export or transfer the model, the news outlet reported. Anthropic and the Commerce Department have not published the list of approved institutions. The letter is silent on Fable 5, though people close to the talks said a release is moving forward.
Health system CIOs have been closely watching Mythos because it can autonomously detect and exploit cybersecurity vulnerabilities, some decades old. Hospital leaders pushed to be included in Anthropic’s Project Glasswing safeguard initiative when the company first withheld the model from public release. Healthcare’s reliance on legacy platforms and long patching cycles makes the window between a vulnerability’s discovery and its exploitation a particular concern.
