The U.S. will extend its national emergency declaration related to malicious cyber threats for another year, the Trump administration announced March 27, citing ongoing risks to national security, foreign policy and the economy.
The emergency, first declared April 1, 2015, under Executive Order 13694, was established to address the growing severity of cyberattacks originating from outside the U.S. Multiple executive orders over the years have expanded the scope of measures to counter cyber-enabled threats.
In a formal notice, President Donald Trump said these threats remain an “unusual and extraordinary” danger, warranting an extension of the emergency declaration beyond April 1, 2025. The decision aligns with the National Emergencies Act and will be published in the Federal Register and sent to Congress.
