Cleveland-based University Hospitals disconnected its systems from the internet after detecting unusual activity on its servers Oct. 22, which took certain digital services offline, including its MyChart patient portal and public website.
“While there is currently no impact to patient care delivery, certain digital services are offline while we investigate,” a UH spokesperson said in a statement to Becker’s. “We are working around the clock to address the issue, but anticipate digital service disruptions may continue for the next few days.”
The spokesperson said UH activated its response protocols and took the systems offline out of an abundance of caution.
UH earlier told Fox affiliate WJW it was working with outside experts to determine the scope and impact on hospital and ambulatory operations.
As of Oct. 23, the UH website displayed a banner warning that only limited services were available and acknowledging problems with MyChart. The system directed patients with questions about results or appointments to contact their provider’s office directly and to call 866-844-2273 to schedule appointments.
UH has not said whether the activity was a cyberattack or when systems will be fully restored.
The 18-hospital system completed its transition to Epic in 2023, converting 5.6 million patient records and scheduling systems into one EHR, a project expected to cost about $400 million.
