Cleveland-based University Hospitals said the vast majority of appointments and procedures are proceeding as scheduled despite an ongoing cybersecurity incident that has left its MyChart patient portal unavailable.

“Patients are seeing virtually no impact on the level of care they receive. Please know University Hospitals remains open for business and is serving the community,” a spokesperson for the health system told Becker’s.

Patients remain unable to access MyChart, but University Hospitals stated it is “working around the clock” to restore that accessibility. Until then, the health system is calling patients to remind them of upcoming appointments.

“We apologize to our patients for the inconvenience this is causing,” the spokesperson said.

The update comes after a University Hospitals’ spokesperson told Becker’s on Oct. 26 that it had rescheduled some appointments and elective procedures because of the incident. At the time, the health system also reported network connectivity challenges at some locations and problems with insurance preauthorizations.

The disruptions began Oct. 22, when University Hospitals detected unusual activity on its servers and disconnected its systems from the internet. The health system said it is investigating the incident with outside experts and has been in communication with law enforcement.

University Hospitals said Oct. 26 that it had made significant progress restoring systems over the weekend but expected challenges to continue throughout the week.

The health system has not disclosed the cause or full scope of the incident, whether patient information was compromised or when MyChart access will be restored.
