Artem Stryzhak, a 36-year-old Ukrainian national who attacked U.S. hospitals and businesses as an affiliate of the Hive and Nefilim ransomware groups, was sentenced Oct. 27 to 70 months in federal prison.

Mr. Stryzhak, formerly of Barcelona, Spain, was one of Hive’s earliest affiliates. From June 2021 to January 2023, Hive conspirators attacked about 1,500 victims worldwide, including hospitals, government entities and businesses, according to the Justice Department.

Mr. Stryzhak and his co-conspirators deployed Hive ransomware against seven victims, including a healthcare provider, a dental office and law firms, during the COVID-19 pandemic. In one Hive attack, a hospital had to forgo digital technology to treat existing patients and could not immediately accept new ones.

“These groups disrupted patient care and caused more than $100 million in losses,” said Brett Leatherman, operations director of the FBI’s Cyber Branch, in a news release.

Mr. Stryzhak separately joined the Nefilim conspiracy in June 2021, agreeing to pay the group’s administrators, including Volodymyr Tymoshchuk, 20% of ransom proceeds in exchange for access to the ransomware. He worked with Nefilim until at least October 2021.

He was arrested in Spain in June 2024 and extradited to the U.S. in April 2025. He pleaded guilty in December 2025 to two counts of conspiracy to commit fraud, extortion and related activity in connection with computers.

Mr. Tymoshchuk remains at large. The State Department is offering a reward of up to $11 million for information leading to his arrest or conviction.
