More than 190,000 people and seven hospitals had their data breached during the ransomware attack on Culver City, Calif.-based Prospect Medical Holdings.

Hospitals and health systems should be on the lookout for data "time bombs" that could cause patient information to be destroyed by hackers, the American Hospital Association warned.

Mount Graham Regional Medical Center, based in Safford, Ariz., said its communication systems and information systems have been affected by a cybersecurity event. 

One year ago, on Oct. 2, 2022, Chicago-based CommonSpirit Health detected a ransomware attack on its IT network.

The August cyberattack targeting Culver City, Calif.-based Prospect Medical Holdings' Connecticut facilities has left a financial strain on the hospitals as some computer systems are still not restored, CT Mirror reported Oct. 1.

Grand Blanc, Mich.-based McLaren Health Care said it has experienced a ransomware attack shortly after a ransomware gang took credit for it, The Record reported Sept. 29. 

The American Hospital Association is asking Congress to urge HHS to "immediately" rescind a rule restricting the use of third-party tracking technologies by hospitals and health systems.

A hospital leader told Congress that a 2021 ransomware attack his health system experienced was "harder than the pandemic, by far."

The Indiana Supreme Court has revived part of a lawsuit against Indianapolis-based Community Health Network, which alleges that the health system disclosed a patient's medical information to a third party, who then posted the information to Facebook. 

Cyberattacks through emails are way up at hospitals and health systems in 2023, software company Abnormal Security reported.
