North Carolina health system settles data breach lawsuit for $1.2M

Whiteville, N.C.-based Columbus Regional Healthcare System has agreed to settle a data breach lawsuit for $1.2 million.

Patients filed a class-action lawsuit following a 2023 hacking incident in which they alleged personally identifiable and health information was compromised for about 132,800 people. The health system denies the allegations and any wrongdoing.

Class members are eligible for up to $5,000 in losses related to the incident and/or a $50 cash payment. The claim deadline is April 2, while the final approval hearing is set for April 9.
