Increase in Data Breaches Could Have Severe Implications for Hospitals

From 2010 to 2011 the number of data breaches affecting healthcare organizations rose 32 percent, according to research by the Ponemon Institute.

The research also found that when a data breach occurs, the diminished productivity and financial consequences that result hold severe implications for the organization.

Additional key findings include:

  • Ninety-six percent of the 72 institutions studied said that they had experienced at least one data breach in the past two years.
  • The studied organizations spent a cumulative $2.2 million in dealing with data breaches.

The widespread use of mobile devices is allowing the increase in unauthorized access to patient information but of the organizations studied, prevention is not a high priority, according to the research.
