Sturgis (Mich.) Hospital detected a hack in its network in June — while it was investigating a December hack.
The 84-bed hospital was investigating unauthorized access to its network for the previous incident when it discovered further unauthorized activity, according to a Sept. 18 notice. A hacker may have accessed or stolen files in both incidents, with as many as 77,771 individuals affected, per the hospital’s submission to HHS.
“We worked with third-party experts to address these events, perform an investigation into the unauthorized activity, and further secure our systems to protect information,” the hospital stated. “We also notified law enforcement, which did not delay this notice.”
The breached data may have included names, contact information, Social Security numbers, bank account numbers and medical records.
