The inspector general’s Aug. 29 report warned that data involving organ donors and recipients in the organ procurement and transplantation network is not protected in the event of a cyberattack. The United Network for Organ Sharing, a nonprofit organization, oversees the organ procurement and transplantation network on behalf of the U.S. government.
The report pushed for the Health Resources and Services Administration to take on a larger oversight role in cybersecurity matters for the organ procurement and transplantation network.
“A lack of finalized, written policies and procedures could result in essential cybersecurity controls not being implemented properly or at all,” the report said.
